Usually many people walk in to an aquarium or fish shop, they are greeted by many tanks loaded with many different species of fishes, both big and small.
Most fishes being sold in shops are still juveniles and by looking at the size they are in the shop, it can be quite decieving. Many of them look very cute and interesting.
But do you have the suitable setup for these cute fishes? Some of them will end up as a monster fish which will outgrow your tank within months!
However, there are also fishes that look similar from other family or the same family which are much smaller than their monster counterparts.
Thus, research is very important when comes to fish keeping. Unlike dogs, cats, rodents, etc...
There is a very wide variety of fishes that we can get our hands on. Not all of them are suitable for the setup we have and not all of them are easy to keep.
It is always good to read up more about what you intend to keep and the requirements of the species before you even head down to any shop to purchase your fish.
Some very useful sites are: www.fishbase.org,
www.planetcatfish.com,
www.loaches.com,
www.polypterus.info, etc...
Both fishbase and planetcatfish are the ones that I always go to check on my fishes.
If none of the above can give me the information I need, there is always www.google.com.
