There are many symptoms when a fish is sick. Some common illness are white spot, fungus, fin rot, mouth rot, etc...
There are many medications available out in the market for treatment. But not all fishes are able to use those medication.
Some of those medication kill instead of cure your fishes. Always read the instruction carefully and make sure that your fish is not allergic to any of those medication before dosing.
When in doubt, always check with someone who have experience in treatment or bring your fish to a vet who have experience with fish treatment.
As of my knowledge, there are only two vets who treats fishes in Singapore.
They are:

Basically, most illness are due to poor water condition. By maintaining good water condition, your fishes will get well very fast.
But for serious illness like bacterial infection, immediate treatment is required.
If you failed to treat it with commercial medication, you will need to seek veterinary advise.
